What Counts as Direct Deposit for Bank Bonuses?
Last reviewed 2026-11-02 (ET). Banks change their rules without notice.
The short version: Most banks define direct deposit as an electronic deposit of pay, pension, or government benefits from an employer or agency, usually sent through ACH. Whether a transfer from another bank or a payment app counts depends on the bank. The bank's own terms are the final word.
How banks usually define it
Official terms often say something like "a recurring electronic deposit of your paycheck, pension, or government benefits." Under the hood, banks look at how the ACH deposit is coded and who sent it. Transfers you start yourself between your own accounts often don't qualify, but some banks accept them.

Your options if you don't have payroll you can redirect
- Split your paycheck. Most payroll systems let you send part of your pay to a second account.
- Choose offers with no direct deposit requirement. See the "no direct deposit" picks in our current offers.
- Government or pension deposits. These usually count where payroll counts.
Risks to know
- Using a method the terms don't allow can mean you won't get the bonus.
- Banks can change what counts at any time. Results from other people are not guarantees.
- Moving your paycheck can delay a pay cycle. Plan for that.
